Outline of the Establishment of the Nagoya University - Chulalongkorn University International Collaboration in Sustainable Materials Engineering

Purpose of Establishment

This department will be established on the basis of joint research, academic exchange agreements, and student exchange programs between Nagoya University (Graduate School of Engineering) and Chulalongkorn University, which have been promoted up to now. The main objectives are as follows To grow into a "hub university of Asia, learning and developing together with Asia," as advocated by Nagoya University, the Graduate School of Engineering will link its advanced research on materials engineering from atoms and molecules with Chulalongkorn University's research on natural resources and raw materials to promote the development of a system that efficiently circulates materials and energy for the achievement of the SDGs. By linking advanced research on materials engineering from atomic molecules with Chulalongkorn University's research on natural resources and raw materials, we will develop research and education on systems that efficiently circulate materials and energy toward achieving the SDGs. Based on Chulalongkorn University's strong connections with companies and governments, we will clarify the image of the system to be utilized in society, and make the best use of the different climates and cultures of Japan, where "strength lies in manufacturing and recycling products based on raw materials in an environment lacking in natural resources," and ASEAN, including Thailand, where "strength lies in the effective use of natural resources and raw materials. The program will realize a practical educational program that covers both global and local areas, making the most of the different climates and cultures of Japan and ASEAN countries, including Thailand, where "strength lies in the effective use of natural resources and raw materials". z By educating students in an overseas academic environment, culture, and system for a long period of time from the early stage, students will not only acquire knowledge and experimental techniques of materials engineering in depth, but also develop their international perspective, cross-cultural understanding, planning, and problem-solving abilities. z The Joint Degree Program is a program for students who wish to study in a foreign country. z By implementing the Joint Degree Program, we aim to obtain international recognition of the research and educational capabilities of both universities, and to improve the universities' ability to communicate internationally and to be competitive.

Necessity of establishment

Necessity of international joint research to practice materials development combining Thailand's abundant natural resources and raw material processing technology with Japan's nano-technology (trends and needs in the research field) z Fostering internationally-minded human resources in the field of materials engineering against a background of industrial globalization and promotion of industry-academia collaboration, and fostering doctoral students who can become international leaders in the field of materials engineering to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs, which are international goals (needs of society and students). z Realization of "making Nagoya University one of the world's leading research universities" in the field of engineering (future vision of the university).

Expected Effects

By realizing a joint degree program with Chulalongkorn University, the top university in Thailand in the QS ranking for four consecutive years from 2018 to 2021 and the top university in the field of materials in Thailand, human resources with an international perspective, planning ability, and academic development ability can be nurtured. z By realizing a joint degree program between Nagoya University and Chulalongkorn University, human resources with an international perspective, planning ability, and academic development ability can be nurtured. z The joint degree awarding system between Nagoya University and Chulalongkorn University is expected to lead to international quality assurance of degrees and to enhance the international reputation of both degrees. In addition, joint education and research with Nagoya University, which is implementing many initiatives to promote joint academic activities with major universities around the world, will lead to international recognition of the university. z The university will bridge industry and academia in Japan, Thailand, and ASEAN, and will foster pioneers who will contribute to society through "monozukuri" (manufacturing).

Admission Capacity

The admission capacity will be 5 students (2 from Nagoya University and 3 from Chulalongkorn University), which will be included in the student capacity of the parent school, the Graduate School of Engineering.

Date of Establishment

April 1, 2022 Name of Degree Doctor of Engineering. The English name of the degree shall be "Doctor of Philosophy" for international acceptability. Doctor of Philosophy" in consideration of international acceptability.

Outline of Courses

1 credit is 45 hours of study. Courses that students of both universities will mainly take are as follows. 1) "Doctoral dissertation research" (48 credits in total) 2) "Special lectures" (4 credits in total) (3) "Special Lecture" (4 credits in total) (3) "Seminar" (6 credits in total) (4) "Seminar" (6 credits in total) Completion requirements The student must be enrolled in this department for at least three years in principle, acquire the above 52 credits, receive research guidance, and pass the doctoral dissertation review and examination. D. dissertation must be submitted to an international journal registered in the Science Citation Index (SCI) with a peer-review system, and after two papers have been accepted, the dissertation must, in principle, be published in print.

Outline of Selection for Admission

The applicant must meet the admission requirements of the University and of Chulalongkorn University. z The admission procedure is conducted twice a year at each university. z The admission procedure is based on the following criteria The joint admission screening committee consisting of relevant faculty members from both universities will be established twice a year, in April and October at TUFS and in August and February at Chulalongkorn University, and based on the admission policy, the committee will examine the application documents and oral examination to determine the basic knowledge, understanding and language skills appropriate for conducting research in each specialized field. The committee will evaluate and examine whether or not there will be any problems in taking courses in both universities. After the screening by the main university, the admission decision will be made by the Joint Admission Committee and the Faculty Council of the Graduate School of Engineering at the University.

Handling of transferring majors

The Graduate School of Engineering of the University of Tokyo, Department of Materials Design Engineering, Department of Materials Processing Engineering, Department of Chemical Systems Engineering, and the Graduate School of Engineering of the University of Chulalongkorn. D. programs of the Graduate School of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, or the Faculty of Science of Chulalongkorn University for more than one year, and who wish to join our department from the second year, we will ask them to submit their grades and research plan in their home department, and if their ability is confirmed to be equivalent or better than our students, they will be admitted to our department. If the student's ability is confirmed to be equal to or higher than that of the students of this department, the student will be admitted.
